Particle image volumetric velocity systems measure velocities by determining the movement of a particle over a well-defined period of time, using the technique of a two-pulse laser. A laser light knife illuminates a plane in the stream, and the position of particles (naturally present or added to the stream to obtain a sufficient number of reflected signals) in this plane is recorded using a digital camera. A little later (after a few micro- or milliseconds), a second pulse illuminates the same plane, creating a second set of images to measure the particle velocity.
